Anti-torture rally, Aug. 16

Psychologist and psychoanalyst Stephen Soldz wrote an op-ed in the Sunday Globe about the participation of psychologists in developing U.S. government torture techniques. It's called "Ending the psychological mind games on detainees" It describes the complacence of the organization's leadership on this issue.

Please join a rally at the Boston convention of the American Psychological Association to demand that the organization take a clear stand against the participation of its members in torture. The ACLU of Massachusetts is co-sponsoring the rally, and event details are here.

Dear ACLUM,

Want to change the world? Then make sure that at that rally shows up 16,000 little stickers that say "Not Our Profession! No Torture Complicity!", which your protesters ask convention-goers to put on their badges in a show of support.

Because making manefest to the governance of the APA the depth of support among the membership of the APA for banning psychologist complicity in torture will do VASTLY more to effect this change than pretty much anything else you could do at/with that rally.

That sticker idea is a good one. I'm just curious, who else is sponsoring the protest?

Just to let you know, as co-sponsors of the event, it's not our place to make stickers talking about "our profession." It might be hard to make 16,000 stickers on short notice, but I did forward this suggestion on to one of the event organizers the other day!

I'm helping to organize this protest. We will be out front of the convention center all day today and tomorrow with flyers. NOte that tape makes a flyer into a sticker.
If they haven't arrived yet, tomorrow we'll have buttons. Please drop by!
